Moi University To Construct Sh9 Billion Hostels

Moi University
The government and donors will finance the construction of 15,000-unit hostels for Moi University at a cost of more than Sh9 billion. The project will ease accommodation challenges for students at the university. 10,000 of the housing units will be put up at the main campus near Kesses while the other 5,000 will be built at the Annex Campus near Eldoret town.

The university has partnered with Shelter Afrique in the project that will help to ease accommodation problems for the 30,000 students. President Uhuru Kenyatta, who attended the university's 29th graduation ceremony a week ago, said the government will support the project as part of plans to expand the university.

Yesterday, Uhuru's adviser Joshua Kuttunyi said the expansion is a priority for the government to enable the institution admit more students. "The university will stop using the KPA depot in Eldoret after the expansion plan starts," said Kuttunyi. He said the government will prioritise education to achieve Vision 2030.

Early this year, the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Richard Mibey met officials from Shelter Afrique and Aengus Investment Properties over the hostels project. Aengus CEO Richard Rubin and Samson Muriithi of Shelter Afrique discussed a partnership with the university. Shelter Afrique will be the financier of the project and Aengus will be the contractors.

According to information posted on the university website, once the project is complete, it will have a shopping complex, sporting facilities, WiFi connections, swimming pools and extra cottages for visitor's and parents. "Such projects will also generate employment oppotunities for our youth," said Kuttunyi.
