Student Riots Persist As Evelyn Hone College Erupts

Student Riots at Evelyn Hone College
Evelyn Hone College students this morning rioted over the Patriotic Front government's scrapping off of bursaries from the institution.

The students who had thought their public support for the removal of subsidies by government would endear them to the PF establishment ran riot after learning that they had been duped as government had completely removed the bursary scheme without announcing.

Students mobilized themselves around 03:00 hours and attempted to march to Church Road but their efforts were met with heavy police brutality who fired teargas and beat up some students in the process.

It is unclear how many students have been arrested so far. There has been unprecedented riots triggered by colleges and universities since President Michael Sata assumed office on a wave of fake promises that has caught up with the majority young people.

The University of Zambia, Copperbelt and Mulungshi Universities have all resorted to street protests that are only quelled by police who have made them volatile leading to destruction of property and sometimes injuries from teargas and live ammunition.
