The Gambia Teachers Union Co-operative Credit Union (GTUCCU) through its Consumer Corporative Unit (CCU) on Monday presented 200 new motorcycles to teachers across the country as loan for two years. Since it was established in 2011, the consumer co-operative has since then continued to conduct market surveys with a view to identifying the needs of the members and introducing new products that respond to those in need.
The unit has also been providing mobile phones to members so as to ease communication between them, their families, friends and colleagues. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Modou Bah, deputising for the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MOBSE), thanked GTUCCU for making sure that the teachers benefit from the Union and specifically for providing mobile phones together with Close User Group (CUG) for the teachers to ease better communication amongst them. According to him, the motorcycles will make transportation easy for the teachers when going to school and so advised them to make best use of the motorcycles.
For his part, Edrissa Bojang, the chairman of GTUCCU, revealed that since the inception of the Union in 2001 their first assignment was to provide a solar panel to the teachers. He assured of their relentless commitment to fufilling their role of meeting the demands of the teachers. Bojang therefore urged the teachers to make best of the motorcycles.
Baboucarr Joof, the general manager of GTUCCU, expressed honour to distribute 200 motorcycles to the teachers reiterating that the Union was established in order to meet with the demands of the teachers. Joof then assured them that there are more coming on their way, as they are preparing to provide a land to each and every teacher in the country. The registrar of the Union, Cherno Mballow, noted that this is a clear manifestation of the success of the Gambia Teachers Union Co-operative Credit Union, and thanked the board of the GTUCCU for their hard work.
