Federal Government Begs ASUU to Call Off Strike
The Federal Government has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its strike.

The government made the appeal at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo.

Briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, Interior Minister Abba Moro said the council deliberated on the strike as well as the general overview of the education sector.

Moro stated that the council expressed concern about the effects of the strike on the polity and resolved to establish negotiations with the striking academics at the cabinet level towards resolving the industrial dispute.

The minister added that the council also urged the ASUU to have a rethink over its usual resort to industrial action and start considering alternative means of pressing home its demands.

According to him, the government is mindful of the challenges facing the education sector which drive students to foreign institutions, including those in neighbouring Benin Republic.

Moro claimed that the government was determined to reverse the trend as it considered it a waste of national assets and foreign exchange.
