Seven Thai universities listed in QS subject rankings

Seven Thai institutions made it into this year’s QS World University Rankings by Subject, which reveals the top 200 universities for 30 disciplines including degree subjects such as mathematics, economics, civil engineering, psychology and law.

The Thai institutions figured in 13 subjects.

Kasetsart is the top-ranked university in Thailand, placing 33rd for agriculture. In terms of subjects, Chulalongkorn University is the best performer with 12.

Worldwide, Harvard University in the United States is the leader in psychology, politics, pharmacy, medicine, law, education, economics, earth/marine sciences, biology and accounting.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology follows as tops in physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science and chemistry.

Third is the University of California at Berkeley with pre-eminence in statistics, sociology, environmental sciences and communications.

Ben Sowter, head of research at UK-based Quacquarelli Symonds’ intelligence unit, said that with the Thai government working towards the Asean Economic Community in 2015, having seven universities in the top 200 was a positive step towards the country’s goals.

As several governments around the world move towards the “student pays” model on higher education funding, employability is increasingly crucial to graduates.

QS is the only global ranking of universities that takes into account the opinion of employers, giving students a current reflection of what employers are seeking.

The survey evaluated 2,858 universities and ranked 678 institutions.
