UEW Begins activities to mark 20 years

The University of Education, Winneba on Monday October 15, 2012, begun the celebration of its 20th anniversary with a candle light processing through the principal streets of Winneba and on its campuses in Kumasi, Mampong and Ajumako.
In a short address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw paid glowing tributes to his predecessors; Prof. Ampene  (Ag. Chairman, 1992-1994), Prof. Nathaniel Kofi Pecku (Principal, 1992-1998), and Prof. J. Anamuah-Mensah  (Principal and later VC,  1998-2007) who he observed worked tirelessly to establish the foundation on which the University stands today.  He observed with a lot of pride the massive transformation that has taken place given all the campuses looks befitting that of a University.
The University of Education, Winneba  was established in September, 1992 as a University College under PNDC Law 322 through the amalgamation of seven diploma awarding institutions, viz: the Specialist Training College, the Advanced Teacher Training College, the National Academy of Music – all located at Winneba; the School of Ghana Languages, Ajumako; College of Special Education, Mampong-Akuapem, St. Andrews Training College, Mampong-Ashanti and the Advanced Technical Teachers’ College, Kumasi. On May 14th, 2004 the University of Education Act, Act 2004 was enacted to upgrade its status from the University College of Education of Winneba to a full fleshed University and to provide for the training of teachers for all levels of education.
With the Mandate to produce professional educators who will spearhead a new national vision of education aimed at redirecting Ghana’s efforts along the path of rapid economic and social development, the University runs over 90 programmes from 46 academic departments, 9 faculties, two schools and an institute from four campuses:- the Winneba Campus, the Kumasi Campus, the Mampong-Ashanti Campus, Ajumako campus and over 23 study centres spread across the length and breadth of Ghana.
With an initial student number of 481 in November 1992, the University currently boasts of over 40,000 student numbers. It has since 1992 turn out 70,232 graduates already and is about to add to this number in November 2012 and April 2013.
