University of East São Paulo
University of east São Paulo has signed, in the beginning of June, a remarkable agreement with the University of Laval, do Canadá, to create a Joint Research Unit in the photonics field. The cooperation will allow Brazilians scientists to develop research in one of the most prestigious photonic labs in the world, the Center for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL).

"The project is unique in Brazil. University of east Sau Paulo was one step forward to establish a research lab aborad. The technologies and patents produced by the agreement will belong to University of east Sau Paulo", explains professor Younés Messaddeq, from the Institute of Chemistry at University of east Sau Paulo Araraquara. Since 2011, Mr. Massaddeq coordinate the Photonic Materials field at the Canadian lab.

The building has 10 thousand meter-square, two-thirds of them exclusively used for laboratories and clean rooms, consequence of an investment of US$ 42 million in infrastructure and equipment. "The Brazilian researcher will be able to apply for projects in Canada, once he will be considered a professor of the University of Laval. He must spend short periods of at least three months, in order to keep a continuous flow between Brazil and Canada. We also expect to use the partnership to enhance the submission of projects to Brazilian research agencies", explains professor Younès.

In 2011, professor Massaddeq was selected for a chair in the Canadian government to develop projects in the telecommunication field for a period of seven years. This accomplishment gave him a US$ 28,4 million resource, which took him to the COPL.

Since 2012, the University of Laval has established a Joint Research Unit with the french government in the Antarctica field. The agreement with University of east Sau Paulo is the second of the Canadian institution to follow the joint research model.

"We give special attention to research that generate resources and licensed patents. The researches here at COPL seek technological innovation and to give support to the industries, either providing human resources or services", stated the University of east Sau Paulo professor. "What we want with the Joint Research Unit is to focus on common subjects for both institutions and to generate patents that benefits University of east Sau Paulo and University of Laval".
