Malawi and Zimbabwe Schools to Hold Permaculture Open Day

Malawi and Zimbabwe Schools Hold Permaculture Open Day
Five schools from Lilongwe and five others from Zimbabwe will hold an open day ceremony to show case what the schools are doing in mitigating climate change as part of the permaculture and water conservation projects in the schools.

Project Coordinator for Friendship North/South, organisers of the event, Christon Pondakwawo said in the past schools have had to travel to different places to learn about nature.

"This permaculture project is providing learners in these schools an opportunity to learn about water conservation and climate change mitigation.

"We are advocating for children to be at the forefront in addressing the challenges faced in the respective areas," Pondakwawo said.

He added: "The benefits of this project have been obvious because we are able to harvest fruits and vegetables then sell them enabling us to buy learning materials."

During the day, the respective schools will have pavilions in which they will display the benefits of the permaculture project.

The open day will be held under the theme, 'Practicing Permaculture and Preserving Water a Solution to Climate Change.'

The schools involved are Chatuwa, Chankhandwe, Chinsapo, Mwenyekondo and Bambino Private School all from Lilongwe and will be joined by Chakowa, Stanley, Bumburi, St Paul and Chikumbiru from Zimbabwe.
