Nizwa University gets hi-tech Laboratory

University of Nizwa.
In line with the efforts of the Information Technology Authority (ITA) to encourage the adoption of new technology solutions and applications that help to develop the ICT  sector in the Sultanate and foster the creation of new business, Dr Salim bin Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of the ITA, and several officials and specialists from the ITA visited the University of Nizwa.

The visit comes as part of the terms of the partnership and collaboration between the ITA and the University of Nizwa to improve the use of new technologies in academic areas.

During the visit, the second Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Laboratory was opened, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to ensure cooperation in implementing and managing the incubation programme to produce small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that deal with information technology. Many topics related to the cooperation and partnership between the ITA and the university were discussed during the visit.

An MoU in support of the SAS Programme was signed between the ITA and the University of Nizwa. On behalf of the ITA, the MoU was signed by Dr Salim Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of the ITA, while Dr Abdulaziz Al Kindi, general-secretary of the Board of Trustees and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Nizwa, represented the university.

The MoU seeks to establish an appropriate environment for SMEs operating in the IT field by establishing a centre for business incubation (virtual incubation) at the university and promoting the exchange of experiences, studies, and information on administrative and financial mechanisms to assist with the establishment and training of SMEs. It also aims to promote a culture of entrepreneurship and self-employment by organising a variety of events in the IT field.

The FOSS Laboratory at the University of Nizwa is the second laboratory of its kind; the first laboratory was opened at Sultan Qaboos University, coinciding with the FOSS Conference in February 2013.
