UCC to assist Ashesi University College to gain Autonomy

Ashesi University College
The President of the Ashesi University College (AUC), Dr. Patrick Awuah has indicated the college’s intention to apply for a charter after 10 years of mentorship with UCC.

Dr. Awuah therefore called on UCC to assist AUC to attain the status of a full University with the rights to award its own degrees and diploma certificates.

Dr. Awuah declared this intention when he paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. D. D. Kuupole to introduce the newly-appointed Provost of AUC, Dr. Marcia Grant. He described the relationship between UCC and AUC as very cordial and professional stressing that “AUC has come this far as a result of the rich experience we have tapped from UCC.”

The President of AUC expressed interest in collaborating with UCC to undertake joint national and international research projects as well as exchange of staff for its intended graduate programmes. He also recommended links with partner Universities abroad to undertake projects in areas of interest to both institutions.

Welcoming the visitors, Prof. Kuupole pointed out that at 50 years UCC had resolved to focus on training more PhD graduates to bridge the gap of ageing lecturers. He explained that the new focus graduate training was also to create opportunity for upcoming Universities to increase intake of undergraduate students.

Prof. Kuupole commended AUC for introducing innovative programmes considering the few years the college had been in existence. He gave the assurance that AUC could count on UCC for the much needed assistance as far as the charter was concerned.
