SIAYA county is set to benefit from a University named after US President Barrack Obama following a proposed plan by a Kenyan-US based Professor.

Professor Michael Ikua Muiga who was the Policy Staff Member of President Barack Obama, re-election campaign 2012, said plans are underway to construct the University at Nyang'oma Kogelo, Siaya County.

Muiga said they are currently sourcing for a 10 acres piece of land to expedite its construction before the end of president Obama's tenure in office.

"We are soon opening a branch in Nairobi but we want the main campus be located at Kogelo village where Obama traces his roots," added the Professor.

He pointed that the University will be offering unique courses adding that some are currently not offered in most of the Universities in the Country.

Muiga pointed that School of Government will offer degree on county government and governance adding that democracy and Institutions will also be offered.

The academician added that the University will also provide Institutional management, infrastructure management aimed at changing the dilapidated infrastructure in Siaya.

"We will offer industrial, material, foundation, petroleum and irrigation engineering at the school of engineering," he added.

Muiga added that already he has engaged former US senator Bob Graham who has expressed willingness to assist the university achieve its academic status.

The professor said once the University starts providing courses, retired US professors will be invited to teach courses which lacks local lecturers to take.

He added that the establishment of the University will put president Obama's name in the education circles just like George Washington University in US named after the former president.

Muiga however called on the Kenyan government to assist in building the University which enhance the international relations with the two countries.

His sentiments come barely a few days after President Barack Obama welcome Uhuru Kenyatta's victory saying he was ready to work with the Kenyan government.

The proposal has been welcome by leaders from Siaya including governor Cornel Rasanga and Ugenya politician Steve Mwanga.

They said once the project is established will save residents from the agony of travelling long distance in search of higher learning institutions.

"Currently Siaya county has Odera Akang'o and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University which are kilometers away from Siaya town. The idea is great since a number of civil servants will enroll for various courses," added Mwanga.
