Universities Programme Get Sh50 Million Boost

ZUKU will sponsor this year's Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) basketball programme to the tune of Sh50 million.

Unveiling the sponsorship package at the Makande Welfare hall in Mombasa on Sunday, Wanainchi Group chief executive officer, Richard

Bell said they will cater for the basic needs to help Kusa continue to discharge their duties and improve the standards of the game.

"We are impressed at what Kusa has done for basketball.

They have skilful young players and we want to support that," said Bell, who also added adding that they are happy to invest at grassroots."

The package he said will cater for uniforms for all the team, referees and officials' training and other logistics. He said his main aim is to see Kusa league turned into a world class event.

Boniface Salano, the Kusa vice chairman in-charge of competitions, hailed Zuku for the move, which he said will help improve the standards of basketball in all varsities.

"Kitting has been our main problem at Kusa. We are happy this has been taken care of besides other logistics," said Salano. Kusa have a total of 38 teams drawn from five conferences namely Nairobi, Central, Coast, Western and Eastern.

Meanwhile, United States International University (USIU) teams claimed the KUSA crowns, wining their final matches against their opponents from the University of Nairobi with much ease during the finals played at the Makande Welfare hall.

USIU "Tigers" hammered UoN "Terrorists 60-48 in a one sided finals tie. The winners were ahead 28-17 at the breather and went all the way. Victor Bosire led the USIU side with game high 20 points while Kenneth Kogotho provided another 14.

USIU "Flames" on the other hand, torched UoN "Dynamites" 64-22 in another one-sided game. The high riding victors had a strong 41-11 points tally at the break and subjected their opponents to a harrowing experience as they failed to score in double figures in all the quarters.

National team star Hilda Indasi managed 15 points with Cynthia Irankunda posting 17 for the winners. UoN had a combined 16 points from Ndiga Okech and Charity Wanjohi.
