Students Protest Comrade?s Death

Karatina University
OVER 1,000 students of Karatina University in Nyeri County yesterday went on strike protesting over the death of one of their own.

The students walked out of their lecture halls and walked to Karatina town for over 15 kilometres where they were joined by their counterparts from the Town campus and continued protesting peacefully although the local wananchi stopped them.

Waving placards and twigs the students lamented that they had gone for games in Mombasa on Good Friday last week but one student who is a third year student Amos Etyang drowned in a swimming pool but what shocked they were told to continue with the games instead of mourning.

"We are also suspicious why we were told it was drowning and yet he was bleeding. Although we were told to wait for postmortem report, we suspect foul play," Shouted one student.

They later camped at the university gate braving chilly weather vowing not to return to the university until their grievances were met. They added that the university is insecure especially while walking at night from the university to the hostels. The students added that they are only given Sh250 for accommodation which is too little for them while outside the university.
