In an effort to assist the administration of the Nimba County Community College (NCCC) in Sanniquellie, a student from the county attending the AME Zion University on Benson Street has advanced a proposal to sensitize the people about the need to financially support and upgrade the standard of the college.
According to Mr. Obediah Kanneh, who is a senior member of the AME Zion Branch of the Nimba University Students Association (NUSA), the contribution of L$10.00 from each citizen to support the first higher public institution of learning in the
county is necessary to backup the limited government budget allotted to the institution. He said the limited budget cannot allow the authorities to efficiently and effectively manage the affairs of the college.
Mr. Karnah explained that the allotment made by the government to the school is not enough to provide quality education for the growing number of youths. There is therefore the need for the people of Nimba County to work towards designing policies that will enable them to financially support the college.
He told the Informer that what is necessary now is to design a formula for citizens hailing from Nimba residing in Monrovia and other parts of Liberia to unite and work with one accord to ensure that there is money available for the up keep of NCCC.
Commenting on how the process would be implemented, the NUSA member challenged Nimba County organizations in Monrovia and other places to collaborate with the county's legislative caucus at the Capitol, County Administration and that of the college to make the proposal take effect.
Mr. Karneh who proposed that the L$10.00 dollars be paid as voluntary contribution by each citizen and friends of Nimba, indicated that if the proposal is accepted, all functioning organizations and working groups in the county, including farmer cooperatives, cocoa and coffee farmers, rubber farmers, and oil palm and the motor bike unions, amongst others should be encourage to contribute.
He however appealed to the executives of NUSA, the Chairman of the Nimba Legislative Caucus and Nimba Citizens in the Diaspora to support his proposal to safe the county junior college from collapse.
It could be recalled that citizens of the county contributed money towards the construction of offices for district education officers in the former seven school districts in the county.
At the same time, Mr. Karneh has lauded the people of Nimba for their developmental orientation and altitudes that is gradually improving the economic and social development of the county and hopes that the proposal will be accepted to raise funds to elevate the standard of education in the county.
