AUN; South African Students Receive Grand Welcome

South African scholarship students, who are being sponsored by the Jacob Zuma Foundation, had dinner with members of the University community at the AUN Hotel,

Conference Center & Spa on Thursday, January 31.

Phetile Nkwanyama, Thabani Mnotho, Ntanzi Siyaponga, and Nxumalo Nhilakonipho Mthonti were welcomed with a speech by Mr. Julius Ayuk Tabe, AUN Chief Information Officer. He told AUN’s newest students, “Work hard and make your country proud.”

Dean of Student Affairs Byron Bullock and Assistant Dean Abdullahi Bello spent the rest of last week registering the South Africans for class and making them comfortable on campus. The AUN Club of Internationals, led by Mohammed Ngiemon, a Cameroonian student, also welcomed them to their new home.

Gregory Blose, a consultant with the South Africa-based Foundation, escorted the students to Nigeria. “Before we arrived [in Yola], we thought we would be welcomed by one or two people…but when we saw how many people met us at the airport we were excited. This kind of welcome says that the people here at AUN really believe in the work they’re doing.”

Phetile Nkwanyama will major in natural and environmental science, Thabani Mnotho Ntanzi has chosen to major in accounting, Siyaponga Nxumalo will be petroleum chemistry major, and Nhilakonipho Mthonti will study business administration.
