OOU SUG Appeal To Ogun State Governor Not to increase Tuition fees

State owned tertiary institutions have been mandated to source for revenue to pay their workers.

The students of Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, on Thursday appealed to the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, not to increase the fees paid by students of the institution.

The Student Union Government of the school made the appeal in Abeokuta in a statement signed by its President, Ifade Olusegun.
The statement said the appeal was sequel to the information reaching the student body that the state government had instructed the management of state owned tertiary institutions’ to generate revenue for payment of staff.

“It is no more news that the visitor of our institution, and Governor of the State, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, has instructed all state owned tertiary institutions, including our Premier University, OOU, to source for revenue in paying salaries of its workers,” the statement noted.

Lauding the developmental projects of the state government, the students, however, said education is an important component for the development of the state.

“No doubt the on-going expansion and construction of roads and bridges in the state by the Government is a welcome development, which is part of what is needed as a pre-requisite for economic development.

“However, it should be noted that building bridges at the expense of quality investments in education and provision of affordable education to all, is committing societal suicide as the role of education in society outweighs mere building of bridges and roads,” the students said.

The student union also called for the release of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls.

“What we want to see, soonest, is the return of our students and our juniors to the society where they belong and not in the forest with the human beasts,” it said.
