The selection of a new vice-chancellor (VC) of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, UNIZIK, Awka, in Anambra State, has been mired in controversy following the alleged attempt by the chairman of the institution's governing council, Air Vice-Marshal Larry Koinya, to manipulate the result of the selection committee.
It was gathered that the five-man selection committee headed by the chairman of the governing council, had at the weekend interviewed the nine professors it had earlier short -listed out of over 34 professors that applied for the position, and based on the committee's assessment, Professor Greg Nwakobi, the university's deputy vice-chancellor in charge of administration topped the list, followed by Professor Joseph Ahaneku, the immediate past deputy vice-chancellor, academics, while Professor Ben Osisioma, a former dean, faculty of management sciences came third.
LEADERSHIP, however, gathered that while the entire members of the governing council, including representatives of the university senate, had gathered at the university senate building on Saturday to receive the report of the Koinya-led selection committee, the chairman of the committee told members that he had just received a call that he should proceed to Abuja immediately, so he stormed out of the meeting, and thus left the rest of the members confused.
The chairman of the governing council left without the committee presenting its report to the governing council for adoption and confirmation of the new VC.
