Oracle Academy has completed its first Train the Trainer Introduction to Computer Science (ICS) course in Kenya.
The course saw 26 faculty members from Jomo Kenyatta University, Strathmore University and Riara University attend the five day classroom-based training that covered areas of database design and programming with SQL.
According to Dr. Gilbert Saggia Country Managing Director of Oracle Kenya says, "ICT skills are a key focus for government, business and industry alike in Kenya. As an industry leader iwe can help teachers impart globally transferable skill sets to their students, ones that will be of relevance to a broad spectrum of careers and ultimately support economic growth in Kenya."
Oracle Academy's Train the Trainer course is designed to effectively extend access to computer science curriculum. The program enables faculty members to become proficient in Oracle Academy curriculum and prepares them to train other instructors to deliver the courses to a growing universe of students. This model supports broader learning communities and provides teachers with a proven methodology for bringing computer science education - through Oracle Academy curriculum - to their classrooms and students.
Jane Richardson, Regional Director, Oracle Academy, Europe, Middle East and Africa, said, "Computer science is a 21st Century skill, and the technology industry has a role to play in ensuring that students around the globe have access to high quality curriculum and resources that help them gain industry-relevant knowledge and skills."
"Robust training programmes for faculty are a critical component of Oracle Academy's effort to enhance computer science education. We are excited to extend our engagement with universities in Kenya by adding this Train the Trainer Introduction to Computer Science course to our existing Advanced Computer Science program."She added
Dr. George Okeyo, Chairman of the Department of Computing, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), participant in the training said, "The five-day Database Design and Programming with SQL training course was interactive and comprehensive, covering our expectations and more. We are all raring to use the new knowledge and skills in our teaching and lectures for the benefit of our undergraduate and postgraduate students."
