Holy Trinity Senior High School was yesterday crowned winners of the special "What Do You Know" quiz held in Accra as part of activities to herald Ghana's 57 independence anniversary celebrations.
The quiz was to test the knowledge of students from three selected Senior High Schools in Greater Accra Region on events before, during and after independence.
The other schools were Tema Methodist Day Senior High and O'Reilly Senior High.
In a brief address, Mr. Frank Kwasi Asante, the Deputy Director in charge of Publishing Division of the Information Services Department (ISD) noted that the occasion helped to recall the bad, ugly and happy moments that the forebears went through before they gained independence.
"Some young ones like those gathered here actively participated in the events that culminated in the freedom the country now enjoys. Again some of them suffered for their involvement in the fight," he said.
He shed more light on the roles that some high school students played which led to the independence of the country. He stated that some teachers and students from high schools in Cape Coast were expelled when they protested in solidarity with the detained "Big Six".
He urged Ghanaians to "fight against the negative tendencies that did not bring unity and make us unpatriotic towards nation building".
Holy Trinity represented by Samuel Baah and Daniel Ayivor won the competition with 23 points. Tema Methodist Day represented by Victor Kwaw and Samuel Mawunyo came second with 14 points, while O'Reilly represented by Ebenezer Dowouna and Jeromi Odadze came third with 12 points.
Each contestant was awarded a laptop, products from Nestle Ghana Limited, and an undisclosed cash prizes.
The programme was organised by the 57th Independence Anniversary National Celebrations Planning Committee in collaboration with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and sponsored by Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) and Nestle Ghana Limited.
The quiz master as usual was Mr. Dan Afari Yeboah, a private legal practitioner.
