First Lady Inaugurates Dormitory For Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO)

The First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, on Saturday inaugurated a 700-bed girls dormitory for the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale to cater for the accommodation needs of the school.

The facility, which was initiated in November 2010 by the then Vice President, John Mahama, was funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund.

Mrs Mahama advised the students to see structural developments of the school “as welcome issues that create an enabling atmosphere for serious studies” and must, therefore, make good use of the facilities.

She expressed the hope that the new facility would ensure increased girls enrolment into the boarding house and, thereby, offer secondary education to more girls who hitherto did not gain admissions into the school.

Mr Bede Ziedeng, Northern Regional Minister, gave the assurance that Government would continue to expand access to education through the provision of necessary infrastructure to promote conducive teaching and learning.

Mrs Mary Asobanyire, Headmistress of GHANASCO, appealed for the renovation of the old girls dormitory to save it from collapsing.

She thanked President John Dramani Mahama and the First Lady, who are both old students of GHANASCO, for their efforts at improving the infrastructural situation of the school.

Meanwhile, Alhaji A.B.A. Fuseini, Deputy Northern Regional Minister, has inaugurated an office complex for the East Mamprusi District Directorate of Education at Gambaga.

The new edifice, constructed by the district assembly, replaced the old dilapidated structure, which was not big enough to accommodate staff of the district education office.
