Three colleges of education in Benue State have been shut down indefinitely by the National Commission on Colleges of Education (NCCE) for "operating illegally".
The three private institutions were alleged to have been carrying out their activities without any regard to the commission's rules.
Those affected include; Emmanuel College of Education, Otukpo, Malami College of Education, Gboko and Tyav Gaav College of Education, Gboko.
Other reasons the commission gave for clamping down on the schools bordered on poor staffing, lack of infrastructure as well as non registration with the Ministry of Education.
While presenting the report of the commission in Makurdi, Executive Secretary of the NCCE, represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Moses Ojo, said the commission has granted provincial approval to Lessel College of Education, Lessel and some days of grace to Aliade College of Education, Aliade.
He warned operators of illegal colleges of education to desist from deceiving members of the public as certificates issued or acquired from such institutions would not be recognized by the commission.
On her part, the state Commissioner for Education Dr. Elizabeth Ugoh reiterated the state government's determination to partner the private sector in providing quality education.
