Young law researcher named winner of international symposium

Dr Andra le Roux-Kemp
Dr Andra le Roux-Kemp, part-time lecturer at Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Law and PhD student at the Centre for Applied Ethics, was recently named the winner of the Young Scholars Symposium for Law and Science held in Pavia, Italy.

The European Centre for Law, Science and New Technologies (ECLT) hosted the third Young Scholars Symposium for Law and Science in June. The Centre is an interdepartmental research center at the University of Pavia and aims (inter alia) to promote scientific dialogue between legal scholars and scientists, and to increase awareness of the theoretical and practical interrelationship between law and science.

A panel of established international academics and researchers (from the USA and Europe) selected eight young scholars to present at the Young Scholars Symposium. The selected presenters represented jurisdictions from across the globe and the topics of their presentations were equally diverse, ranging from the regulation of nanotechnologies, bioethics, genetics and cyber forensics.

Dr Le Roux-Kemp spoke about the potential role of behavioural genetics in the post-conviction stages of South African criminal proceedings. She is currently residing in Berlin as an ema2sa scholar at the Free University of Berlin, Germany.
