University of Jos Conducts Post UME Amidst Tight Security

University of Jos Conducts Post UME candidate
Authorities of the University of Jos yesterday conducted the post Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) despite the strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Our correspondent who visited the institution learnt that the examination which was conducted in batches commenced on Monday with heavy presence of security personnel at the gates and examination halls. Daily Trust also learnt that the examinations were conducted by the non academic staff of the institution.

But ASUU chairman of the institution, David Jangkam, at a press conference said the conduct of the post UME would undermine the strike action embarked upon by ASUU.

Jangkam said allowing non academic staff to conduct the examination amounted to a breach of the Nigeria Universities Commission (NUC) and the university Senate rules on examinations, which restricts the conduct and administration of examinations to academic staff only.

He added, "ASUU dissociates itself from the post UME and we are passing a vote of no confidence on the exercise. We condemn the exercise and call for its outright cancellation. Congress is calling on the university authorities and Senate to rise up to its task of defending and preserving the academic integrity of the university system."
