Atta Mills and Akua Kuenyehia Law Building
Three facilities were named in honour of four individuals for their exemplary leadership, vision and commitment to the growth of their respective departments and faculties at the University.

The buildings are the Atta Mills/Akua Kuenyehia Law Building named after the late President Professor John Evan Atta Mills and Professor Akua Kuenyehia, a former Dean of the Faculty of Law; The Mawere Opoku Dance Hall of the School of Performing Arts named after the late Professor Albert Mawere Opoku and the Ayodele Akiwumi Nursing Building named after the late Professor Ayodele Akiwumi, the first Ghanaian Head of the Department of Nursing.

The Late President was instrumental in securing initial funding for the construction of the Law building and also facilitated the procurement of a generator and an elevator for the building.

Prof. Kuenyehia is credited with the vision of starting the building, the construction of which commenced during her tenure as Dean as well as successfully sourcing funds both locally and overseas for the project.

Professor Albert Mawere Opoku was acknowledged for his pioneering role and devotion of his entire working life to dance education in Ghana, and instrumental in the establishment of the Department of Dance and the Ghana Dance Ensemble.

Despite strong opposition from the nursing fraternity ad even within the University at the time, Professor Ayodele Akiwumi, the first Ghanaian Professor of Nursing and Head of the former Nursing Department, pioneered the creation of the undergraduate nursing programme in the University and conceived the idea of the Nursing building with support from the University and the Ministry of Health.

Family members who were present at the ceremonies thanked the University profusely for the honour done them.

On Thursday, July 4, 2013, two naming ceremonies will also be performed in honour of Prof. Daniel Adzei Bekoe and Prof. R.D. Baeta. The facilities are the Central Science Laboratory Building and the Physics Laboratory.

The naming of these buildings coming during the University’s 65th Anniversary is especially significant as it brings to the fore, the contributions these individuals have made to the work and life of the University of Ghana.

Even though some have passed on, they have left a legacy which will continue to live on. For those living, we congratulate and salute them.
