Millions of chinese student take entrance test to get admission in universities

Chinese Student writing University Entrance Exam
The gaokao, is the most crucial university entrance exam in China. The results were declared recently. Students appear for this entrance test after 12 years of school and wait for their score out of the 750 marks allotted for this test. Every student, out of the 9 million, depends on this score to know which university they will join.

The test is of such high importance that the topics that are asked in essays are discussed in media and the answers are made available online once the results are declared. The name of the toppers appear in the regional as well as national newspapers.

Many students don’t take the test too seriously and often end up scoring zero for essays. Sometimes students score zero points for their answers to the main question in the compulsory language-and-culture section. These answers are later published online.

One student had to write an essay on ‘More important things in life’. He answered by writing that One should be a ‘true punk’, ‘live freely’, ‘get in a fight with a metal band’. He also wrote that ‘I do not want to take the gaokao’ and “In the end, with this grade I can only get into the university of life.” Obviously enough he scored a zero.

But the interesting fact is that such essays get a positive response when published online. In the comments section people have mentioned that these essays should get high marks just for being creative. People seem to be fed up with the current exam system and seem to be wanting innovation.
