Bechem School for the Deaf Appeals for Assistance

Bechem School for the Deaf Appeals for Assistance
Ms Veronica Ayeh, Headmistress of the Bechem School for the Deaf has on behalf of the school appealed to religious organizations, philanthropists and Non-Governmental Organisation to come to the aid of students, in terms of teaching and learning equipments.

She said the school has the visual and hearing impaired students integrated together at the basic education level and the technical level.

According to Ms Ayeh, the school runs a 2 years Kindergarten, 6 years primary and a 4 years Junior High School, because of a special pre-JHS, whilst at the Technical level, the students undergo 4year training in Fashion and Design, Building Technician, Metal works and fabrication, Carpentry and joinery, to be awarded NVTI Grade on proficiency.

She said the school which had 461 students, made up of 281 boys and 180 girls, including visually impaired ones, urgently needs a boy's dormitory, classroom block and teaching and learning materials at both the basic and technical level.

Ms Ayeh disclosed that the school has a cultural troupe which is very wonderful, but lacks costumes and other instruments needed to perform better on higher platforms.

Again, the headmistress indicated that a provision of sporting equipments would go a long way to unearth hidden talents to nurture them for the national teams.

Ms Ayeh made the appeal when the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG) team of the Entrepreneur Action in Us (ENACTUS), a student group presented some start up items to the school at Bechem.

The team had earlier offered training to 210 of the students to produce hibiscus drink (Sobolo) with the hibiscus plant and also how to use fabric pieces to make items such as buttons covers, bags, arm-bands and ear rings, among others.

ENACTUS aim is to help the students to start the production of the hibiscus drink for their personal use and for sale to generate income.

Mr. Ayeh explained that periodic government subvention was not enough for the running of the school as student enrolment continued to increase. She said food items such as rice, oils, maize as well as clothing were also needed to take care of the students.

Mr. Kennedy Kwasi Amenu, President of the Team assured that the team would continue to support the school. He said it was linking up with both local and international NGOs to provide assistance toward the upkeep of the students.
