Teacher Buried in 30-Year Grave prepared inside his house

Residents of Bware village, Uriri district at the weekend flocked to the home of a 74 year old man to witness his burial in a grave he had prepared inside his house over 30 years ago.

George Mayienga, fondly known as 'Mwalimu', was laid to rest in the same grave but he could not have his wish to be buried in coffin he had bought 30 years ago because it was too old.

Also, his wish to be buried before noon wasn't granted as many speakers wanted to eulogise the teacher. His body was lowered at 2.30pm.

"We chose to obey his last wishes to be buried in his prepared grave but we did not anticipate any bad omen if we did not do as he wished," John Thuthu his elder brother said.

Thuthu said his brother prepared his own grave and coffin so that he couldn't bother people and relatives when he died and to avoid from travel expenses of taking his body to their ancestral land of Gem Maliera, Siaya County.

"He took his measurement and dug the grave, plastered it and bought his coffin too. He also wanted to be buried before noon so that visitors couldn't bother with food," Thuthu said.

One of his daughter-in-law said they took the wish on the burial place as a respect to the departed and avoid bad omen from falling back to the family.

The deceased was a renowned Kiswahili teacher was eulogized a good financial manager, hard working with meticulous cooking techniques.
