Makerere Hosts 50 Years of East Africa
Makerere University is joining Unesco to commemorate 50 years of the University of East Africa this Saturday.

The university, started on June 29, 1963, encompassed the colleges of Makerere, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, before it was dissolved in 1970.

According to Makerere University spokesperson Rita Namisango, the celebrations will attract six "prominent alumni", including Matthew Rukikaire, who was guild president at the inauguration of the university, Dr Martin Aliker, a former chairman of the Council of the University of East Africa, and literary icon, Prof Ngugi wa Thiong'o.

President Museveni will also grace the celebrations at Makerere's main hall during which he will launch an English version of former Tanzanian president, Julius Nyerere's book, Women's Freedom, Women are Eagles, Not Chickens.
