Ghana excels at 2013 Model United Nations Conference Summit

Ghana’s delegation to this year’s Model United Nations Conference for Middle and High Schools in the U.S won the prestigious Best Delegation Award for Excellence, Organisation and Comportment.

Individual members of the delegation also won separate honours at the just ended Global Classrooms Model UN conference held at the US State Department in Washington DC.

UNICEF's Best Delegation award was won by Chelsea Bagonluri (SAPs School) and Stephen Agbodza (LIFE International School) while Ama Serwaa Markin and Maame Aba Amponsah-Arhin from Tema Parents School had Honourable Mention.

Ghana also won Honourable Mentions at a similar conference held at the UN Headquarters in New York. These awards went to Esther Agyeman-Badu (SOS Hermann Gmiener Tema), Eyram Agbe (Queensland International School), Lesia Sefa and Paulina Opoku Abankwa (SOS Herman Gmiener, Kumasi), Samuel Bartels –Mensah (Queens International ) and Kenneth Anim (First star Academy)

Director-General for Foreign Service and Human Resources at the US State Department, Linda Thomas-Greenfield who opened the conference expressed the hope the Model UN experience will deepen ongoing interests and engagement in Foreign and International Affairs issues among young people.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield who has been nominated the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs by President Obama congratulated teachers and facilitators for providing the platform for young people to learn to be better diplomats and leaders in future.

Ghana was represented at both conferences by 60 students drawn from first and second cycle schools from the Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Central and Ashanti Regions under the auspices of Life-Link Friendship Schools-Ghana.

Executive Director of Life-link Friendship Schools-Ghana, Ernest Gyimah-Danquah said the intensive training and rigorous selection of the participants from Ghana has contributed to the meritorious performance of the Ghanaian students in the program over the years.

“On yearly basis, our delegation attracts recognition from organizers and judges and we are most grateful to the US Embassy in Ghana and school heads for the tremendous support they have offered us over the years”, he said.

The annual event is organised by the Global Classrooms Project, the UN Association of USA and supported by United Nations Foundation with the aim of grooming young persons in global politics and international diplomacy.

Ghana’s delegation has since returned home.
