Four Students Mowed to Death By Speeding Vehicle |
Traffic commandant Samuel Kimaru says the three boys and a girl were hit by a pickup that was headed to Kinangop from Ol kalou.
"We have started the week on a bad note losing four students. They were going to school when they were hit by a speeding double cabin pick up at 7am," Kimaru said.
Among those killed were a brother and a sister aged six and nine years respectively. The others were a standard six pupil and a form one student.
The driver and another occupant sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the North Kinangop Mission Hospital.
According to witnesses, the vehicle first hit one of the students who was riding a bicycle, veered off the road and hit the other three who were walking by the roadside.
All the four died on the spot.
A witness, James Gitonga said the driver of the pickup was trying to avoid hitting the student who was riding the bicycle but instead hit him from behind and lost control.
He said that the three others tried to escape but were killed as the vehicle rolled several times before it hit a tree and stopped.
The incident caused a public protest by residents who blocked the road for the better part of the morning causing a traffic snarl up.They demanded bumps to be erected on the section of the road which they termed as a black spot.
Kipipiri ward representative Michael Kirumba noted that over 10 people have lost their lives near the spot and emphasised the need to erect speed bumps.
"We will not rest until bumps are erected. We will not watch and see innocent people lose their lives due to negligence by the government," he said.
Nyandarua Governor Daniel Waithaka and his deputy Waithaka Mwangi rushed to the scene where they assured residents that their demands would be met.
In Nairobi, 10 other passengers were wounded after a bus they were travelling in from Githurai overturned in Kariokor.
