The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Banjul has announced that 16 young male and female Gambian students have won the 2013 International Higher Education Scholarship Programme provided by the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (ICDF).

Ten of the students won master programmes while six won bachelor programmes in different fields of study.

According to information received from the Taiwan Banjul Embassy, the programmes, which provide the Gambian students the opportunity to pursue higher education in the Asian island nation, are sponsored by the Taiwan ICDF and promoted by the Embassy of Taiwan in The Gambia every year. The information revealed that the application was more competitive this year because there were more than 400 student applicants for the scholarship.

"Notably, the Gambian winners still take the biggest part of the scholarship among all the African countries," it added.

The 16 students Thursday received their scholarship awards at the Taiwan Embassy in Bakau, where they also received their acceptance letters from the ICDF. They will leave for Taiwan between the 1st to 3rd of September and will be provided with air tickets, tuition fees as well as credit fees, insurance, housing and monthly allowances.

The embassy has also revealed that it will arrange a special Mandarin course for the scholarship winners at the Taiwan Culture Centre at the Gambia National Petroleum along the Bertil Harding Highway in Kanifing before their departure.
