UK Partners Lagos Schools On Capacity-Building
The British Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Peter Carter, has said the UK Government is willing to partner the Lagos State Government in building the needed capacity to develop the teaching skills of teachers in the state.

This was disclosed by the Deputy High Commissioner when he paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye in her office.

Commending the Lagos State Government for the strides recorded in the education sector, Carter said; "the level of education in the state shows that Lagosians take education seriously. The level of attendance at the schools is exceptionally high and that is a testament to the role of the state government in promoting education as the best way of preparing young people for the challenges of adulthood and parental commitment to education.

"The Department for International Development (DFID), British Council and my office are committed to working with our Nigerian partners, especially Lagos State, to help build capacity to enable the senior management in schools make the best use of their skills in developing teaching skills and crucially, to enhance and encourage the role of parents in their children's education and the work that schools do in providing that education."

Pointing out that education is fundamental to the prosperity of any society, Carter said through the DFID, the UK Government is making important contribution to the growth of education in Lagos State.

"In public education, we are helping to build capacity in terms of skills on the management side, improving structure and getting more parents involved in their children's education. We are also helping to raise the profile of private education in the state because both sides play vital roles in ensuring that young people not only manage an increasing complex world, but also contribute to the development of that world."

Appreciating the efforts of the UK Government, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, called for more assistance in areas of ICT facilities and technical and vocational education to facilitate better and easier teaching and learning.
