The new dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine will come from Michigan, if the IU trustees approve the appointment.

IU said Monday it had chosen Dr. Jay Hess, chairman of the pathology department and professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. The IU trustees are due to take up the appointment at its June meeting.

The 53-year-old Hess would become the 10th dean in the School of Medicine’s 110-year history and the first dean in the past five to come from outside IU. Hess would succeed Dr. D. Craig Brater, who is retiring June 30 after 13 years as dean and 27 years at IU.

IU President Michael McRobbie said Hess was selected from a national field of more than 50 candidates.
