Garissa Gets First Public University
Garissa now has a university after Moi University opened a constituent college at the county. Garissa University College is the first public university in the North-eastern part of Kenya and speaking at its opening ceremony at the weekend, Education PS George Godia challenged residents to rise in their academic endeavours.

"Garissa and North-Kenya residents now have the opportunity to advance their studies and make themselves marketable in the job market as well as use the skills acquired to develop this province," he said.

Godia said with the new devolved government, the government is committed to establishing a university in each county as enshrined in the constitution.

He under scored the importance of education in the county and said the government through the ministry of education will factor in budgetary allocations to the new Garissa University College while putting modalities in place to make it a fully fledged university.

He urged the region's leaders to fully support the facility. Sheikh Hassan Ali, Garissa Training Teachers College Principal said this is a "treasure to the people of this region and must be used for their good".

"We are very thankful to the kind gesture by Moi University and we the leaders of this region, will make sure that our people get maximum benefit from this new facility", he said.

Ali said coming of the university has been as a result of lengthy discussions adding that it has been "a long journey full of challenges but in the end, it has become a dream come true".

The university will share the same premises with Garissa Teachers Training College until a new site to relocate it is identified. Ali said the university will be opened for admission and learning in September.
