THE construction of a 2,500-seater capacity Indoor Stadium at Filbert Bayi Secondary School at Mkuza area, Kibaha district will be completed in June, this year.

According to the Managing Director of Filbert Bayi Secondary School, Anna Bayi, the construction of the stadium will be executed with a cost of 800m/- upon its completion.

Bayi told journalists over the weekend that the facility would provide much-needed sporting opportunities to youth and would accommodate a range of indoor games. She said the venue that possesses international standards has basketball, volleyball, handball and tennis courts.

The former Chaneta chairperson said that the Filbert Bayi Institute moved to develop the facility upon realising that the country was faced with acute shortage of indoor stadia. She said while the idea to build up the stadium had long existed, they were compelled to implement the plan when the nation hosted the African Netball Championship, with participants experiencing a lot of difficulties, including leaky roof and frequent power cut-off.

Bayi said they are expecting to invite one of the prominent basketball teams in the world to grace the official opening of the facility in June. Filbert Bayi Secondary School was founded by former Tanzanian middle-distance runner of the 1970s, who set the world records for 1,500 metres in 1974 and the mile in 1975. Apart from academics, the schools cater for professional sportsmen and at the same time maintain international athletes in various sports.
