Oshun State University Lecturers Vow to Continue Strike

Oshun State University
LECTURERS in the four tertiary institutions owned by Oshun State government, yesterday, disobeyed the court order directing them to resume classes with immediate effect.

The teachers had in the last six weeks embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands among others, elongation of their retirement age from 60 to 65 years, full implementation of contributory pension scheme, removal of new tax regime in the state, poor funding and inadequate staffing.

Justice Oyejide Falola, while ruling on an order of interlocutory injunction filed by three students' union presidents on behalf of the institutions on Wednesday, directed the Rectors and Provosts of the affected institutions to resume academic activities pending the determination of the originating summons.

The presidents of the student unions, for and on behalf of the students of the four institutions namely, Muideen Kareem, Rauf Akindele, Mattew Adegboyega and Abiodun Oshun, had dragged management of their institutions and government before the Osogbo High Court demanding immediate re-opening of the institutions so that they could continue their programmes.

Counsel to the plaintiffs had asked the court for an order of interlocutory injunction directing the Rectors and Provosts of the institutions, jointly and severally, to open their various institutions for academic activities pending the determination of the originating summons.
