It's white smoke day at Van Hise Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, as a committee charged with selecting a new chancellor for the state's flagship is cloistered with four finalists interviewing for the job.
After conducting interviews all day, the selection committee of five members of the UW System Board of Regents and UW System President Kevin Reilly will meet behind closed doors to reach a concensus pick.
A public announcement of that pick is expected early next week, once the job has been offered and accepted, though the choice still must be formally approved by the full board of regents at their next regular meeting April 4 and 5.
Will it be Michael Schill, dean and law professor at the University of Chicago Law School? He's the top pick of UW-Madison associate professor of educational policy studies and blogger Sara Goldrick-Rab. Goldrick-Rab, also a faculty senator, assessed each of the four candidates for chancellor on her blog.
What about Nicholas Jones, the engineering dean from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, whose academic background and love for running remind some observers of UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Michael Lovell?
Or will it be acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank, a two-time finalist for the UW-Madison chancellor's job? The last time she was a finalist, in 2008, Carolyn "Biddy" Martin got the job.
Martin resigned in 2011 to become president of Amherst College in Massachusetts, and was replaced by Interim Chancellor David Ward. Some observers have remarked that Blank bears a striking physical resemblance to both Martin and former UW-Madison Chancellor Donna Shalala, who went on to a federal cabinet post.
Rounding out the finalist field is Kim Wilcox, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Michigan State University until a couple of months ago. He is now working with the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, a nonprofit organization with strong ties to MSU that was started in 2001 to promote sustainability.
All four finalists have been on campus this week, meeting with faculty, students, alumni and others interested in the search. The salary range for the chancellor's job is $426,500 to $522,500; details of the contract won't be finalized until the full board of regents meet in April.
This has been a big week for the UW System and its leadership.
Wednesday, the regents committee and Reilly interviewed five finalists for the UW-Eau Claire chancellor's post. Those candidates spent time on the Eau Claire campus, meeting students, faculty, alumni and others, during individual visits.
A public announcement is expected Monday on the new UW-Eau Claire chancellor pick, who also must be formally approved by the full board of regents in April.
The candidates for the Eau-Claire chancellorship include: Pam Benoit, executive vice president and provost at Ohio University; Kathryn Cruz-Uribe, provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University, Monterey Bay; Anne E. Huot, provost and vice president for academic affairs at the College at Brockport, State University of New York; Kent Neely, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Western Oregon University; and James C. Schmidt, vice president for university advancement and executive director of the WSU Foundation Board of Trustees at Winona State University.
The new chancellor will succeed former UW-Eau Claire Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich, who stepped down last spring to accept a job as president of Westminster College in Salt Lake City.UW-Madison’s Gilles Bousquet has served as UW-Eau Claire’s interim chancellor since July.
"Every week's a big week at UW System," UW System spokesman David Giroux said Friday morning. "But we've got two searches converging. It's always exciting to see new leadership."
