MIDDLE EAST, UAE World’s top universities revealed at Dubai event

Dubai, UAE: America’s prestigious Havard University has come out on top in a survey of the world’s best places to study.

The global launch of the World Reputation Rankings of 2013 took place in Dubai on Tuesday, at the British Council’s ‘Going Global 2013’ education conference, in front of professionals from 80 countries.

The report was presented by Phil Baty, the rankings editor of Times Higher Education (THE), which commissioned the rankings. He told delegates at the World Trade Centre event: “Reputation is subjective, messy and nebulous, but it matters deeply in today’s competitive global higher education sector.

“Research has shown that a university’s reputation is the top priority over location or even salary for academics moving jobs, and it is the number one consideration for internationally-mobile students, above tuition fees and course content.”

The team that compiled the survey contacted more than 200,000 academics around the world in various languages, including English, Chinese and Arabic, to ask them which universities stood out for them in a variety of criteria.

This year, 16,600 useable surveys were returned and after collating the survey results a university ‘supergroup’ was named – topped by Harvard. Baty said: “An elite group of six global ‘super-brands’ has widened its lead over the rest of the world’s top universities.

“The top six stand significantly ahead of the rest of the pack in the annual top 100 list.” Baty added that some universities were climbing the ranks – including New York University, which has jumped from the 51-60 band in the listings to 29th place in 2013.

Others to watch out for include the UK’s University of Manchester and Australia’s Monash University and the University of New South Wales. Baty added that an institution’s reputation can be “key to attracting collaborative partnerships and funding”.
