The VEC Annual Event was organised under the theme “The Emergence of Islamic Banking: Opportunities and Challenges”, as HBMeU reaffirmed its commitment to step up its efforts in support of the “Islamic Economy” initiative of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Prof. M. Fahim Khan, Distinguished Faculty Member, National Defence University in Islamabad, was the event’s guest keynote speaker, while Prof. Mohamed Zairi, Growth & Corporate Strategy, Assistant Chancellor, HBMeU, conducted a special presentation about the unique capabilities of HBMeU to support Dubai Government’s vision to establish the emirate as the “Capital of Islamic Economy”.
A Panel Discussion was also conducted during the event with Professor Nabil Baydoun, Learners & Enterprise Development Assistant Chancellor, as moderator.
Dr. Mansoor Al Awar, Chancellor, who handed out the awards to the winners during the ceremony, said: “Excellence in leadership is a vital element in our society’s continuing pursuit of sustainable growth and development.
Being one of the world’s leading proponents of innovative e-learning methodologies, HBMeU has therefore been proactively engaged in initiatives that sustain the significant gains the UAE has achieved in terms of developing a new generation of quality leaders.
The ‘Feigenbaum Leadership Excellence Award’ is an integral part of our efforts to promote a culture of leadership excellence in our society. With the recent announcement of Dubai Government’s ‘Islamic Economy’ initiative, we believe that it is crucial to further step up our efforts to develop a much deeper pool of competent leaders who will help realise this vision in the future.
In this regard, I commend this year’s winners for heeding our call for excellence in leadership and I hope that they will continue to achieve bigger goals and serve as role models for the UAE’s upcoming leaders.”
The recipients of the Feigenbaum Leadership Excellence Award during the VEC Annual Event were Mr. Mahmood Ahmed Al Bastaki, CEO of Dubai Trade in the “Accomplished Leaders” category; Mrs. Kawakib Jaffer Hassan Alasmawi, Branch Manager, United Arab Bank, in the “Women Leaders” category; and Captain Rashed Abdulla Al Douseri, Organization Excellence Secretariat Section Head, Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, in the “Rising Stars” category.
Eng. Mahmood Al Bastaki, CEO, Dubai Trade, said: “I am humbled by this great honour, and I feel fortunate to have been born and raised in this nation whose wise leadership has always been my inspiration and role model for seeking accomplishment on the work front as well as in my personal life.
As much as this recognition makes me proud of my team and partners at Dubai Trade and the achievements we made together, it gives me a greater sense of responsibility to even outperform myself and share with other Feigenbaum award winners their commitment to mentor future generations in our respective countries.

The Feigenbaum Leadership Excellence Award was established in honour of Dr. Armand Val Feigenbaum, known as the “Father of Total Quality Control” and the originator of Total Quality Management, the approach to quality and profitability that has profoundly influenced management strategy and productivity in the competition for world markets in the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
