A 30-year old woman who claims to be a student of the University of Liberia (UL), Cynthia Gbalea, has been arrested while attempting to smuggle drugs (Italian Whites) into the Monrovia Central Prison (MCP) on UN Drive.
According to a press release, she was arrested by prison authorities on Monday, February 25, 2013. The suspect has also been charged with drugs trafficking and Illegal possession of narcotics and subsequently sent to court for prosecution in line with the laws of the country.
According to Ministry of Justice (MOJ) Press Release issued in Monrovia, Ms. Gbalea who went to the Monrovia Central Prison (MCP) to visit an Inmate, identified as Mohammed Massaquoi, was caught giving the drugs to the inmate in the visiting hall. Massaquoi has been in the prison on charges of Mercenarism.
The cost of the drugs was estimated at LD$70,000. Suspect Cynthia Gbalea is also believed to be a resident of the SKD Boulevard Community in Paynesville.
The MOJ release further indicated that it was established during preliminary investigation that inmate Mohammed Massaquoi who is also the spouse of suspect Cynthia Gbalea along with another inmate, Simeon Uche, a Nigerian national, contacted her (Ms. Gbalea) for the drugs.
In a related development, a female corrections officer assigned at the Monrovia Central Prison has also been arrested for allegedly smuggling marijuana into the prison.
The corrections officer, Ruth Karmoh, according to the MOJ release, has been charged with drugs trafficking and Illegal possession of narcotics and sent to court for trial.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has warned those visiting the MPC to reframe from unlawful and criminal acts or risk arrest and prosecution as required by the laws of the country.
