A four member delegation
from the Implementation Committee Secretariat of Niger State University
of Education, Minna, Nigeria paid a working visit to the University of
Education Winneba (UEW) from Tuesday, January 29 to Thursday 31, 2013.
The delegation consisted of Prof. M.A. Daniyan, Chairman,
Niger State University Education Implementation Committee (former Vice
Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna) Dr. M. I.
Lemu, Member (Hon. Commissioner for Tertiary Education Science and
Technology, Niger State,) Prof. Ibrahim A. Kolo, Member (Vice
Chancellor, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University) and Prof. Faruk R.
Haruna, Member (Provost, College of Education, Minna).
The delegation interacted with the Vice Chancellor, UEW,
the Pro Vice-Chancellor, some Principal Officers, Directors, Deans, and
Heads of Department in their bid to understudy the UEW model, especially
its structure, operations and programmes to enable them map out a
successful strategy for the establishment of a proposed Niger State
University of Education.
Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, welcomed the delegates to the
University and wished them a fruitful stay.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. E.N. Abakah noted that the
committee was in the right place considering the history of UEW. ‘As
brothers from the same continent, it is a good thing we learn from each
other despite our location’, he added.
There were talks from some senior members after which
there were questions from the delegation.
The Deputy Registrar, Division of Operations, Mr. Rexford
Abedi Boafo gave a brief background on the university touching on its
identity, institutional structure, some history, its campuses,
admissions and faculties and schools. He also hinted on students’
accommodation, the university organogram, institutional policies and
achievements.
Director for the Institute for Educational Development and
Extension (IEDE), Dr. Kwame Asante also talked about the UEW Distance
Education Programme, from beginning to date.
The Acting Finance Officer, Mr. Theophilus Ackorlie’s
topic bordered on, “Financial Management in Higher Institutions in
Ghana”.
Some Deans and Heads of Department briefed them on the
development and operations of their faculties and departments.
The delegation also toured the South, North and Ajumako
Campuses of UEW, the Kakum National Park and the Cape-Coast Castle. The
delegation left Ghana on Friday, 1st
February, 2013 with fond memories of UEW in particular and Ghana in
general.
