Qatar Foundation Welcomes ITOCHU Contribution to HBKU Education

Doha, Qatar: November 24, 2012 – The ITOCHU Corporation has signed an agreement with Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development under which it will invest US $7.5 million over 5 years in Hamad bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) education programs.

The ITOCHU Corporation is headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan, and its President and CEO is Masahiro Okafuji.

“It is a great honor for ITOCHU to cooperate with the State of Qatar in the development of a new generation of leaders, said Mr. Masahiro Okafuji. “We sincerely believe that our contribution to this program will deliver further prosperity for the state and strengthen bonds between the citizens of Qatar and Japan.”

His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al-Thani, Ph.D., President of Hamad bin Khalifa University and Chairman of WISE, said: “We very much welcome the support of ITOCHU Corporation which will help individual students from around the world. I am pleased that ITOCHU, which is a partner in Qatar’s oil and gas industry, is now also a partner in our journey towards becoming a knowledge-based society and setting a good example for corporate responsibility toward education.”

ITOCHU’s contribution demonstrates its long-term commitment to Qatar’s higher education initiatives, and that it is committed to providing students with the financial resources necessary to obtain an education that will enable them to serve as the leaders of tomorrow.

The signing took place in Doha, Qatar, during the World Innovation Summit for Education, an international platform that encourages the sharing of innovative ideas and best practices in education amongst industry, academia, international organizations, the voluntary and public sectors, and the media. Prior to the signing, Mr. Yoichi Kobayashi, Executive Vice President of ITOCHU, also had the opportunity to meet Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and present her with a gift thanking her for her visionary leadership and honoring the agreement between ITOCHU and Qatar Foundation .

HBKU is a leader in education and research. It positions Qatar and the region at the forefront of research-based higher education, building the next generation of global leaders and citizens. ITOCHU’s commitment and contribution is another step in reinforcing HBKU’s commitment to collaboration as it continues to enhance the educational opportunities available to all its students.
