German Engineers Call On Vice-Chancellor Of KNUST

A delegation from two universities in North Rhine Westphalia, the Technical University of Dortmund and Westfalisch Hochschule University of Applied Science, have paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. William Otoo Ellis. The visit was in connection with the cooperation between KNUST and the German State of North Rhine Westphalia in renewable energy development organized by the two institutions.

The leader of the delegation, Prof. Ralf Holzhauer, Director, Westfalisches Energy Institute Center for Recycling Technology, expressed his joy for what he called “the marriage” between KNUST and the German institutions and he was hopeful that the project, which was intended at converting the power supply of KNUST to renewable energy, would be beneficial to both parties. The project, also aimed at providing vital demonstration for teaching and learning purposes, would further help develop the capacity of KNUST in project planning, implementation and management of renewable energy and electrical engineering. Eventually, the project, known as PLAN2k14, would also provide the university with a more reliable and stable power supply in the long term.

Prof. W.O.Ellis also shared in his joy for such an initiative, as the Ghanaian economy, in the near future, would have to look for alternate sources of energy due to the rapid growth of the population. He therefore urged the delegation, to as much as possible; transform KNUST by implementing the project and other policies.

The delegation also included Prof. Karin Kückelhaus who specializes in electrical and lighting systems, building management systems; Prof. Andreas Wichtmann a professor in Turbo machinery, Power Plant Technology and Simulation, Mechanical Engineering and Energy Systems; Thomas Nierhoff specialist in Photovoltaics,  Renevable Energy and Electrical Engineering and Prof. Johanna Myrzik, deputy head Institute of Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency and Energy Economics, Technical University of Dortmund.
