The University of Calabar Student‘s Affairs Division has organized a one day NYSC training workshop recently at the senate chambers of the Institution.
The workshop which had as its theme “ Deepening the Credibility and accuracy of NYSC mobilization process through ICT ” was designed to ensure that participants internalize all aspects of ICT project.
In a welcome address, the Principal Assistant Registrar, Student affairs officer, Mr. Otogo .M. Obule stated that the aim of the workshop was to get all staff involved with the NYSC Registration, to be acquainted with the new on-line platform which is specially designed to address some challenges associated with the previous NYSC customized access versions.
Mr. Obule while welcoming all participants to the event, which will impact positively on NYSC mobilization, stated that the on-line platform is integrated information from the National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
Mr. Obule further advised all participants to avail themselves of the opportunity to address issues bordering on students affairs division and the NYSC will continue to ensure that only genuine and eligible graduates of the University of Calabar are mobilized for National Youth Service.
In an address, the Chairman, Senate Committee on NYSC matters, Prof. Stephen U. Uche advised heads of departments, secretaries and computers Operators to be vigilant in the cause of carrying out their official duties especially on issues pertaining to students result, adding that heads of departments should endeavour to published results that is cleared and signed as at when due.
Prof. Uche further stated that the workshop has become necessary to check mate fraudulent activities regarding NYSC mobilization in the University of Calabar.
In an earlier remark, the Dean of students Affairs�, Prof. Eyong Ubana Eyong who spoke on what he termed “ Challenges of NYSC mobilization process via ICT ” enumerated the challenges encountered in NYSC mobilization to include; backlogs of results and documentation.
Prof. Eyong also advised heads of department on the issue of CES student�s mobilization alongside NUC students, adding that while the NUC students are being mobilized for NYSC, the CES students should equally be issued exclusion letters to avoid confusion as this according to him will help checkmate mobilization racketeering.
Prof. Eyong noted that, the National Youth Service Scheme does not recognize department that has not been fully accredited by NUC, adding that Deans and HOD�s whose departments has not receive accreditation should mobilize their students under departments that are accredited.
He called on heads of departments to always clear backlogs of results before the end of their tenure in office, stressing on computerization of data/document for safe keeping.
In a brief remark, the Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof. Maisie Etukudo commended the student�s affairs division for organizing a workshop of that magnitude and implored participants to take advantage of the opportunity.
Highlight of the event was a power point presentation by a resource person, a technical officer (NYSC Affairs) Mr. Bassey Effanga who educated participants on the new NYSC mobilization platform and the on-line registration.
