The latest example comes from a Texas high school football game, as reported by Ben Baby of the San Antonio Express-News: Two players were ejected after deliberately hitting an official. The first player knocks the official to the ground with a blindside hit. The second player then spears him.
The two players are from John Jay High School in San Antonio. Jay lost 15-9 at Marble Falls on Friday night. The situation had already gotten testy, according to the Express-News, as two Jay players were ejected before the play in which the official was drilled.
Pascual Gonzalez, spokesman for the Northside Independent School District, told The Associated Press that video of the incident was "extremely disturbing" and there will be an investigation.
According to the Express-News, Marble Falls coach Matt Green said that Jay coach Gary Gutierrez apologized and that "he had to believe there was no way Gutierrez condoned the behavior and was upset with the behavior of those players."
Austin Football Officials Association secretary Wayne Elliott told The Associated Press that the referee wants to press charges but "the first thing we want is that those two kids never play football again."
