Teachers' Union, TUC Condemn Killing of Students in Yobe By Sect Members

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria have condemned what they described as "mindless" and "despicable" killing of students of the Federal Government College Buni-Yadi, Yobe State.

A statement issued by the NUT Secretary General, Obong Obong, commiserated with the government, parents and teachers of Yobe State, while calling on the federal government to strengthen security and ensure the protection of children and the entire school system in Yobe State in particular and Nigeria in general.

The TUC decried the killings saying, "it is beastly, inhuman and totally uncalled for".

A press statement jointly signed by TUC President Comrade Bobboi Bala Kaigama and Secretary General Comrade Musa Lawal described the attack as "heinous and brutal".

"There can be no justification for Boko Haram to continue to kill and maim innocent people. We understand that the bandits also abducted 20 female students, most probably with intent to use them as sex slaves," it said.

While sympathising with those affected by the carnage, the TUC charged Boko Haram members to embrace reason and dialogue... down their weapons and make a u-turn from their unholy path.

It urged government and security agencies to step up action to end the "inglorious affront of Boko Haram" while calling on traditional, religious, political and opinion leaders in the North East to urgently intervene to end the violence by the sect.
