TEIN-EP University College, Ave Trainees Association to support JHS students

Two student groups, the Tertiary Education Institutional Network (TEIN) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Evangelical Presbyterian University College, Ho branch, and Ave Teacher Trainees Association of Akatsi College of Education have volunteered to support junior high school students in the Akatsi North District in the Volta Region.

The groups numbering 20 and 30 respectively will be spending some time with form three students in various schools in the district to prepare them for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) this year.

President of TEIN, EP University, Ho, Patience Emilia Sagata said they hope to spend a month with the students taking them through various subjects with emphasis on English, Mathematics and science. She said their presence will benefit especially those in remote parts of the district.

According to her they look forward to making this intervention an annual event to impact positively in the future of their young ones. She commended her colleagues who volunteered for their sacrifice and hope they make meaningful impact on the students.

District Chief Executive for Akatsi North, James Gunu said last years’ performance at the BECE was nothing to write home about, adding that of 370 students presented only 65 passed representing 16 percent. This forced him to take some hard and pragmatic decisions including cancelation of teachers’ award celebration last year.  But to give the students hope, he sorts the assistance of TEIN to give the children the needed preparations and tuition for the exams.

He was grateful for the good intention and expressed confidence that this years’ result would see some drastic improvement. He also disclosed that three mock examinations would be organized for the students with the cost spread among parents, the Member of Parliament and the district assembly.

“As social democrats, this government is committed to developing the educational sector to train the human resource of the country, and this is the spirit that informed the gesture of volunteers”, he stated.

Mr. Gunu also assured that the district assembly is collaborating with the education directorate and traditional authorities to provide accommodation, food and other facilities that would provide the volunteers maximum comfort during their stay.
