In addition to sponsoring the pupils, 120 coaches were also sponsored to undergo a training program. The package also included the provision of training materials for the schools. In all, the MTN Ghana Foundation invested a total of GH₵ 64,000 in the 2013/2014 Spelling Bee Challenge.
Before the grand finale, the Spellers were hosted by MTN for a facility tour at the company’s office at Graphic Road to enable the Spellers familiarize themselves with activities of MTN and to get them to understand the telecommunications industry.
Speaking about the sponsorship, the Executive Director of the MTN Foundation, Mrs Cynthia Lumor, congratulated the overall winner of the Spelling Bee whilst encouraging all the finalists especially representatives of the Akropong School of the Blind.
She said, “as avid supporters of the Akropong School of the Blind, we are indeed proud of their achievements in this year’s competition”.
The MTN Foundation has been sponsoring the Spelling Bee competition since 2007. In 2011, two pupils from MTN sponsored regions emerged the best three at the national level.
