The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo chapter yesterday said its members would not partake in the university promotion exercise scheduled for Feb. 19 and Feb. 20.
Mr Saheed Oseni, LASU's SSANU chairman, told newsmen in Lagos that the decision was taken during the union's congress on February 17. Oseni said the LASU management had released a list of staff to participate in the 2012/2013 promotion exercise, while the 2011/ 2012 batch was still outstanding.
"Members took a unanimous decision at the congress that until the outstanding 2011/2012 promotion issue was resolved, no member of the union will take part in the 2012/ 2013 exercise. Members who were due and scored 65 per cent and above during the 2011/2012 promotion exercise are yet to be promoted; that must be resolved first," the chairman said.
Oseni urged the institution not to discriminate among its members of staff, saying that the decision to select few members for promotion was unacceptable.
"Such a decision would not motivate the members of staff to maximise their potentials. The development would invariably jeopardise the idea of promotion by merit as only the members of staff that the management deems fit would benefit," he said.
Oseni urged the management not to appoint academic staff to some managerial positions reserved for non- academic staff. He said the posts of the registrar and bursar were meant for non-teaching staff.
"The post reserved for us should not be contested for, because it is the peak position of our career, and that is the policy in every university. We are not contesting for the post of the vice-chancellor, deans and head of departments because they are meant for those in academics," he said.
