A dozen other Gambians bagged Masters and Bachelor degrees, as well as diplomas in various fields under the programme.Jobe's gold medal was contested all over Africa, including some French-speaking countries and it is the first time a UTG student wins this category.
The basic objective of the Pan-African e-Network project is to assist Africa in capacity building by way of imparting quality education to students in Africa in various disciplines from some of the best Indian universities/educational institutions. More than forty African universities registered with the programme. It is classified in two components: Tele-medicine and Tele education.
Regarding Tele-Education services from India, which the UTGis registered in, more than 2000 students from Africa have been enrolled in five different top-ranking universities in India in various disciplines like MBA, Masters in Finance Control, PG Diploma in IT, M.Sc. in IT and Bachelor in Finance & Investment Analysis and many others. Regular Tele-Education live sessions are being conducted from India and students have shown great interest in the courses.
The convocation for this year's batch of graduands was held in Amity campus in India and beamed live on internet to all universities under the programme around the African continent.
In The Gambia, the convocation was watched in the closet lecture room of the MDI campus of the University of The Gambia viewed by the 13 graduates, their relatives, course coordinators and the vice chancellor of the University of The Gambia, Professor Kah.
Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Kah and his deputy, Dr. Jah, both congratulated the graduates and paid tribute to President Yahya Jammeh and the Gambia government for providing the UTG, which enabled Gambians to be benefit from the Amity university's Enetwork project. "It is gratifying and heat pleasing to celebrate a great academic achievement right in your own country instead of travelling the long distances and spending a lot of money. What is more, your degrees and diplomas are well earned and respected as others, if not more and you have not moved an inch from your work and your family ," an excited VC Kah told the graduands.
He said the objective of the UTG is to provide an opportunity to Gambians of whatever age to take the initiative to realize their dreams in education. He therefore thanked the Indian government, and Amity University for this Enetwork programme.
Course coordinator Dr Sylvie Coly was commended for her steadfastness and efficiency. She announced with satisfaction that the number of graduated have increased from seven last year to 13 this year, recording a marked success in the programme.
The honorary Indian consul general in The Gambia, Ram Moham, expressed joy at the success of the Gambian students and paid tribute to the India- Africa relationship. He moved the convocation to observe a minute's silence in memory of the late Nelson Mandela, describing the former South African leader as one who contributed a lot to the India-Africa relationship.
In his vote of thanks, Hamey Jawara a graduate, thanked the UTG, Amity and the Indian government for the Enetwork project, and called on fellow Gambians to make use of the opportunity while urging for the continuation of the programme so that more and more Gambians could benefit from it.
Speaking to The Point on his achievement, the only Gold medal winner in the entire programme, Ebrima Jobe, dedicated the medal to the UTG saying, "I am happy to celebrate with the UTG another chapter of success in my academic career and life. I'm happy that I surpassed even the expectations of myself and my friends, who predicted I might win the silver medal. It happens I got the gold which is more than we expected, and I thank God for this." Mr Jobe, like other graduands thanked his spouse, family and friends for the support and encouragement.
